When Tanzania changed it’s export structure in 2018, the most motivated farmers in Shiston Village (outside Arusha, between Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro) took advantage by organizing a community wet mill. In Tanzanian-terms this is a new AMCOS (Agriculture Marketing Cooperative Society) with a CPU (Central Processing Unit), that for the first time can organize and sell through auction or direct export channels. Success was immediate, with members joining from neighboring private groups until nearly everyone in Shiston village signed up.
