Description

San Juan Ozolotepec is where ‘La Pluma’ got its name. La Pluma is the name of the local Typica mutation, adapted to the dry, high, pine-forested Sierra Sur range. For over 40 years indigenous farmers in San Juan Ozolotepec have cultivated coffee on tiny 1 – 5 hectare subdivisions of the larger estates where their ancestors worked. Since the place was ravaged by La Roya in the early aughts, and after Starbucks left, the area went through a reset—growing mostly for local markets. But nowadays the Ozolotopecs (San Juan is just one in a string of towns dedicated to different saints) have reemerged as a common destination for those sourcing specialty coffee.
