Description

Kapchorwa is a town on the western ridge of Mt. Elgon. It’s a plateau that juts straight down and out over savannah as far as the eye can see, making for maybe the best panorama in the country. Add the three-tiered Sipi Falls as an attraction, and it’s clear why this area is the most famous of coffee-producing areas in Uganda.

The people here are of the Sebei tribe, with language, features and customs more akin to the nomadic Karamojong or Masai to the north and east than their more pastoral neighbors – the Buganda and Bugisu – whose ancestry traces west to the Africa’s interior. Because of this difference the two tribes did not get along for some time; even up until 2004, when staff from Crop to Cup first visited the area, members of the two tribes were not allowed to intermarry. The Sebei being the minority, all coffee came down mountain marked as Bugisu AA – there was no designation for keeping coffee from Kapchorwa separate. But we immediately saw the potential for quality and differentiation, and by 2005 were able to start marketing coffee from Kapchorwa.

Now the place is known. The same farmers who were our very first suppliers now grow for Starbucks and other more specialty brands. This attention has helped Kapchorwa to lead the way on what’s possible out of Uganda’s specialty sector.
