Solok Radjo’s initial phase included planting trees across 150 hectares. They’re now expanding to additional hectares. They are growing both shade tree\/forest seedlings and coffee tree seedlings at their coop nursery, and re-making this cleared land into forest land with coffee trees growing under the canopy. A few thousand dollars will support a hectare. Apart from Dutch plantations in Aceh, this was where specialty coffee came first in Sumatra. Here we find a Tokeh  named Kardon who collects from a group of 200 widows. He keeps their coffee separate. While the widows’ families have been in coffee for over 200 years, they often face a knowledge gap after their husbands pass away.  Kardon and his team, with the support of our Sumatra-based staff, assist these farmers with training. They teach farming practices and first-stage coffee processing. Kardon and his wife Yulinda, who manages the books, receives wet parchment from each producer. They further dry and hull it down to green beans. They do this in two locations around Dolok Sanggul, near the south shore of Lake Toba.  Kardon is a younger guy who took over the coffee collection business after his parents retired from it around 2015. We were happy to be the first to contract coffee from this group through to export. We think the coffee does justice to the people behind it. But our staff in Sumatra took to him based on his history of consistent quality deliveries and focus on only buying from farmers who are serious to help him achieve Grade 1 again and again. He does not operate an army of trucks, but instead focuses around 3 communities: Pante Raya, Lampahan, and Permata. All are just slightly north of Lake Takengon, in Aceh. The roughly 300 farmers that sell to Mansur get paid cash directly upon delivery to avoid the common problems of credit buying and loan sharking which can be quite common in Sumatra. The larger region of Bener Meriah produces about 60% of Aceh's total volume. It is blessed by high altitude and a more diverse list of planted tree varieties. Most coffee from here is naturally organic, as the land includes a lot of large shade trees. This reduces the need for heavy vegetable intercropping, which often results in more pesticides being used on a farm. Coffee from Bener Meriah are often larger in size with a bluish gray color.
