Their first couple of seasons were challenging, with drought wiping out the majority of their starter seedlings, but this pushed them toward a more deliberate, irrigation-intensive model that today covers 17 acres across three blocks, planted mostly with Batian, some Ruiru 11, and with Cordia and Grevillea providing shade. \n\nTai Agri is one of the farms that we came to know through the West of Rift Farmers' Caucus, where John Cherogony (owner) and Valentine Togom (manager) were early participants. Their early adoption is reflected in the farm's tidy organization from the field to the washing station and in Valentine's keen attention to detail—her pruner always in hand and often put to use during our February 2026 visit. \n\nDespite Batian's strong reputation in the cup, Valentine was among the only farmers who also spoke highly of it in the field—saying that while Ruiru 11 is fuller and steadier, Batian, with its taller, ganglier, Christmas tree-esque silhouette is easier to read, making troubleshooting more intuitive and improvement that much more rewarding.","brand":"Showroom Coffee","offers":[{"title":"2 lb $20.54 ($10.27\/lb)","offer_id":46063295037500,"sku":"INV05052-2","price":20.54,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true},{"title":"10 lb $94.30 ($9.43\/lb)","offer_id":46063295070268,"sku":"INV05052-10","price":94.3,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true},{"title":"33 lb $286.77 ($8.69\/lb)","offer_id":46063295103036,"sku":"INV05052-33","price":286.77,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true},{"title":"66 lb $543.84 ($8.24\/lb)","offer_id":46063295135804,"sku":"INV05052-66","price":543.84,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true},{"title":"Full Bag (132.28lbs) $1001.36 ($7.57\/lb)","offer_id":46063295168572,"sku":"INV05052-full","price":1001.36,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0719\/5253\/1516\/files\/Tai-Agric-Estate-Washed-Sc.-15-plus.png?v=1785164177"},{"product_id":"muinami-estate-batian-natural-sc-15-30kg","title":"Muinami Estate Batian Natural, Sc. 15+ (30KG)","description":"Muinami Estate is the local name for what Stephen Nendela himself calls Nawiri, the 26-acre farm in the Cherangani Hills that he began rebuilding after the success of a smaller six-acre sugarcane-to-coffee conversion he started with his mother near Eldoret in 2015. In its place stands a modest offshoot, around which brothers Paul and Gabriel Wabuge have planted nearly 30 acres of coffee.\n\nThe farm itself was purchased by their father in 1970 from a British family that had already established some coffee plantings, but gradually the area leaned harder into maize and wheat as coffee prices fell, and Big Tree followed suit. When Paul and Gabriel returned to Kitale in 2019 to take over from their father—a former Kenyan ambassador to the U.S. during the Reagan administration—they had coffee on the mind. Paul, a doctor by profession, had spent time in Murang’a in the Central Highlands, where seeing coffee taken seriously kindled a curiosity about what might still be possible back home. Bilha, the brothers’ childhood nanny, became the farm manager, and has been central to that rebuilding from the start.\n\nSince then, the Wabuges have added roughly a block of coffee each year. Each one is prepared meticulously, with generous spacing, deep planting holes, and heavy manure applications from the outset. Most of the farm is planted with Batian, but Big Tree has also taken a serious step into SL28, enough that by 2026 it had an exportable harvest—one of the first places to do so in the West.","brand":"Showroom Coffee","offers":[{"title":"2 lb $19.76 ($9.88\/lb)","offer_id":67641032835132,"sku":"INV04937-2","price":19.76,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false},{"title":"10 lb $90.40 ($9.04\/lb)","offer_id":67641032867900,"sku":"INV04937-10","price":90.4,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false},{"title":"33 lb $273.90 ($8.30\/lb)","offer_id":67641032900668,"sku":"INV04937-33","price":273.9,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false},{"title":"66 lb $518.10 ($7.85\/lb)","offer_id":67641032933436,"sku":"INV04937-66","price":518.1,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false},{"title":"Full Bag (132.28lbs) $949.77 ($7.18\/lb)","offer_id":67641032966204,"sku":"INV04937-full","price":949.77,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0719\/5253\/1516\/files\/Big-Tree.png?v=1785164375"},{"product_id":"yellow-diamond-estate-washed-sc-15","title":"Yellow Diamond Estate Washed Sc 15+","description":"Yellow Diamond is Habil Olaka’s family farm in western Kenya, a 30-acre property with about 21 acres of coffee across four distinct blocks. Today, though an abundance of fruits, flowers, and an apiary (reached through a small banana grove) remain on the farm, the focus is optimizing for coffee. Soil has been tested and enriched with compost from coffee husk chicken manure, and shade trees of macadamia and Grevillea planted to provide both shade and wind protection. \n\nRuiru 11's stability, productivity, and cup potential when paired with meticulous processing have made it the farm's preferred variety, though Batian remains in play as well. Sitting at roughly 2,200 meters, with the Cherangani Hills behind it and perfectly spaced Batian trees forming corridors throughout, Little Swamps offers a postcard-caliber snapshot of what makes western Kenya’s high plateaus and fertile soils so promising. As realized as this vision already feels, by the spring of 2026 still only about a third of the farm's total 45 acres are dedicated to coffee—leaving plenty of room to grow.\n\nPreviously planted with wheat and barley, Little Swamps was revitalized and optimized for coffee through irrigation from its eponymous nutrient-rich wetland, careful manure application, and an open-door approach to knowledge sharing. Early on, Doris built a core team of women from the surrounding community, helping with school fees and household needs alongside standard compensation. She has spoken of building a seedling nursery and training center on the farm, and while Little Swamps already serves as a beacon for friends and neighbors, Doris remains just as engaged in finding opportunities to keep learning herself, alongside Gideon and Philemon. Muinami is Stephen’s family name, meaning “those who work,” while Nawiri means “prosperity”—both suit the place. Of the 26 acres, about 14 are under coffee, with the balance dedicated to agroforestry, beekeeping, nursery space, and the broader farm system that Stephen and his farm manager, Linet, continue to build out.\n\nStephen is also the founder of the West of Rift Farmers’ Caucus, first convening a small group of producers in 2023 around shared frustrations with rising costs, inconsistent milling, and opaque export systems, and around the shared goal of direct export. Growing pains notwithstanding, the Caucus continues to expand, and its effects have reached beyond the field as well. It's about 5 hours north of Nairobi and might be the most infamous of Kenya's central provinces. Cups here are known for stewy, sticky tomato paste and currant profiles with effervescence and candy sweetness. Giakanja has long been contributing to that reputation. The factory was erected in 1968, only five years after independence, and as is typical of Kenyan factories in this part of the country. It’s built around a large 2-stage Mckinnon pulper, that channels into tens of fermentation tanks. Generous vistas are available at the top of the hill by the cherry hoppers. Bright baby blue paint on the channels and tanks contrasts against a lush rolling landscape. The tanks are piped down to a pump at the bottom of the hill, where the slurry either gets sent to holding tanks (used if the factory was out drying capacity and it needed to preserve parchment) or onto skin drying tables for a primary drying. There's endless rows of steel-framed raised-bed drying tables that undulate with the valley.\n\nGiakanja spun out from the larger Tetu Union in 2000, after fifty years of petitioning for independence. In 2010 they received training and support from Technoserve, setting them up for success, and we are happy to help them get the recognition they deserve. Both in 2017 and 2018 Giakanja FCS was able to boast the best premiums paid to members in all of Nyeri county.\n\nTheir membership is currently just under 1,200 strong (from 86 years old to 18 last we checked), and currently work with CMS – an affiliate of Dorman's that provides inputs as well as milling and marketing support, and supplies Crop to Cup under a year-over-year contract.\n\nMore than the scale, elevation or vistas that all deserve a second glance, what stands out in Giankanja after days and days of meeting with other cooperatives, is the management. John, the W.S. manager, shows us the factory, and has a considered response to greet all our inquiries. He's doing a 72hr ferment and a 21 day dry - covering his parchment at full sun. Sounds pretty on the nose. We see fresh paint on all the surfaces that coffee would touch in the processing and as we pass by the cherry receiving area we see farmers hand-sorting cherry. Signs of sophisticated processing, good management and motivated members are everywhere.\n\nAs we sit in the office we see a map that shows the entire catch basin - where the 1,200 members are all traveling from to deliver cherry. Peter can show us cherry receipts in a log, and Giakanja is paying significantly more than other coops we visited in the area. In 2018 they boasted the highest premiums of any group in the central highlands.\n\nThere are public charts that track sale prices of their crops, and payments back to farmers. Good records means transparency for farmers, and transparency for farmers engenders trust for the membership - but also for us. They keep 12% of the parchment price for the coop - where we often see that number closer to 20%. Peter the Chairman, has been consistently at the helm and communicates confidently and in a timely manner.\n\nThe cup follows suit. We see fantastic and consistent qualities from Giakanja. Cup profiles are very bright, candy sweet and full of grapefruit, melon, and effervescence. It's not rare for us to see quality coffee coming from excellent organization - but it's delightful everytime we encounter it. We've been working with Giakanja now for 4 years, and have contracted before the harvest in 2018 - a rather unusual play in Kenya but one that allows them to pursue higher qualities with more confidence of a buyer - and solidifies our access to their absolute best.
