At the time, Josue lacked the funds to cultivate the land. A friend named Mario had a small coffee nursery, and he lent Josue the coffee plants needed to plant 0.25 hectares of his land. This initial coffee cultivation became the key to his growth, leading to what is now known as Las Delicias Farm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll the coffee produced from these 0.25 hectares of land was sold locally as cherry. Josue saved all the profits to gradually expand his cultivated area, eventually reaching the total of 1.4 hectares of coffee. In 2021, a friend asked to buy all of Josue's coffee and after the harvest, he praised the high cup quality of his coffee. This motivated Josue to process his coffee to dry parchment for the following harvests, further enhancing the quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJosue Martinez loves reflecting on his journey in coffee - how starting with just a quarter hectare of coffee cultivation has led him to the amount of coffee he has today. While he might consider expanding his area a bit more, he's cautious about not cultivating too much land because he understands that specialty coffees demand more attention. Having one hectare of specialty coffee is potentially equivalent to four hectares of conventional coffee. This is why he focuses on refining his processing methods to achieve excellent quality that commands a higher price, compensating for the lower volume.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2023 was his first year trying natural and honey processes - and with great success! This is the coldest region within Honduras (national average 22C)—famous for being the only place that can produce strawberries—and home to Honduras’ highest elevation city (La Esperanza, 1710 MASL) and Mountain (Cordilleras Range, 2,900 MASL). It’s also home to Maira Gómez, manager of a small 80 person cooperative called Comipronil. Comipronil started as and remains at its core a healthcare network for indigenous Lenca producers in the community. But in 2019 Maira met and befriended the team at a near-by coffee cooperative called CAFESMO, who provided infrastructure and training to help Comipronil get started in specialty coffee. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2022 the core of the coffee community in Yamaranguila revolves around four families; those of: Lillian Gomez Orellana, Dimas Rodriguez Sánchez, David Rodriguez, \u0026amp; Doña Escolástica. Their farms are small, between .7 – 2.75 hectares, and so yields are small as well. But every year the group has brought home premiums, encouraging others to get more interested, and have invested in their farms, leading to steady and perceivable progress.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCAFESMO is a collaboration of 250+ members based out of Southern Honduras in the regions of Ocotepeque, where central operations provide support to members in the form of technical assistance and certification, post-harvest processing, storage, and ultimately through to milling, marketing and export. They’re proud of their work and want to make a name for their region. Their team is diverse; young and old, from across nearly all relevant disciplines. And they have momentum. This is just the kind of group who can manage pre-crop financing, lot separation, and the distribution of post-harvest premiums. And, given their status within their community, success here could scale to other families within the cooperative, making it an excellent entry-point for the introduction of specialty processing and premiums. This group receives technical assistance, financing and export services from a local cooperative named Pacayal. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePacayal is small, ten-year-old cooperative in La Paz, the Comayuga Valley, outside of Marcala. In 2012 Edgar Carrilo founded Pacayal in the wake of a devastating round of La Roya, and with the motto ‘quality does not suffer crisis’. From this start, and with the support of Sustainable Harvest, Edgar and family had the contracts, financing (via Root Capital), and technical assistance they needed to get off the ground. At their max Pacayal was able to include over 130 households in their network – all neighbors of Edgar and his extended family.
