Rather than simply purchasing cherry, Getachew’s team registers and maps every contributing farm, trains each producer in agronomy and processing, and maintains meticulous records through a dedicated outgrower engagement office. But don’t take our word for it – just ask the many government and non-governmental agricultural partners who trust the farm’s owner, Mustefa Abalulessa Abagibe, to carefully harvest and process cherry down to high quality seed that is then distributed to highland farmers the region over. When touring Mustefa’s facility one can marvel at the rows and rows of dried parchment (seeds) covered in fine ash to inhibit mold growth while in storage before planting. Several years ago Mustefa and his brother Musa began farming for green bean export, Crop to Cup being their first buyer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou may also find yourself marveling at just how Mustefa came to this land in the first place. Before much of the undergrowth was cleared to farm coffee (dense tree coverage remains for shade growing), this jungle parcel at almost 7,000 ft elevation was a hideout for Mustefa’s father, Abalulessa, a guerilla fighting against The Derg - the oppressive military government of the time. Having failed to capture him and lost soldiers trying, the government turned to the local community with a bounty. His health deteriorating and near death, Abalulessa turned to an old friend and, as thanks for nursing him through his final months, told him to tell the government he had killed him, and thus benefit from the bounty. Located in Oromia, about 400km south of Addis Ababa, Nensebo woreda is home to a collection of smallholder farmers spanning 5,000 hectares of coffee at extraordinarily high elevations up to 2200 masl. The average farm size in Nensebo is two hectares and contains a mix of local coffee varieties, including wild varietals originating from the neighboring forests. Nensebo is a new coffee growing area, categorized as Sidama D on the ECX coffee map.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe story of the washing station's owner, Tariku Kare, is one of the success that comes when hard work and perseverence collide with opportunity. Tariku was born in Bombe and, at 15 years old, began working as a cherry sorter for a local cooperative. He worked his way—first receiving a promotion to wash coffee in the channels, and then when a man from Awassa opened a washing station in Nansebo, he was tapped to manage. The market disruptions led that owner to bankruptcy so Tariku and 17 other workers at the washing station formed a company, opened a new washing—which Tariku managed. Later, he opened a new washing station by himself—this one, in Arsi—to supply coffee to the international market. Once that mill in Nansebo was stabilized and had enough producers contributing cherry, he returned to his hometown of Bombe and built a washing station there. With his health deteriorating and near death, Abalulessa turned to an old friend and, as thanks for nursing him through his final months, told him to tell the government he had killed him, thus benefiting from the bounty. Abalulessa died in 1977—when Musa was just two years old—and as part of a subsequent amnesty and reconciliation program, the government gave land to the brothers and their mother, which Abulelessa’s sons now farm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2006, Musa won a competition held by the Ethiopian government among the 500 participants selected and, as a reward, was sent to participate in AFCA in Uganda, received prize money and a hand pulper. He used the prize money to expand his farm to 43.8 hectares, but, in 2008 the Ethiopian government introduced the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange, ending direct export and requiring Musa to sell his coffee at commercial prices locally in Agaro.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis changed in 2016 when the government began to liberalize coffee export and allow some farmers to hold their own export licenses. Crop to Cup was Musa’s first direct sale customer that year. Musa has inspired other farmers in the region—including his brother Gugu—to pursue direct export as a way to receive higher prices for their coffee. Abdul continues to reinvest. From a new moisture meter, to a new 7500 m sq drying patio (to go with raised beds) completed in 2018. It goes without saying that quality is continually on his mind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCrop to Cup doesn't normally work with estates, but Abdul has been an exception. So, we've got quality and a few other things on our mind when we visit with Abdul. In 2017 we conducted a full social audit with him and came back with quite a few recommendations. The very next year, we come to find that he's built a school on the farm for children before they go to 1st grade. He's built new toilets for the workers, 8 meters deep. In addition, he's implemented a ledger system for employees and their wages - a form of transparency that needed to be completed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAbdul is a man of action. Nensebo is a new coffee growing area, categorized as Sidama D on the ECX coffee map.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe story of the washing station's owner, Tariku Kare, is one of the success that comes when hard work and perseverence collide with opportunity. Tariku was born in Bombe and, at 15 years old, began working as a cherry sorter for a local cooperative. He worked his way—first receiving a promotion to wash coffee in the channels, and then when a man from Awassa opened a washing station in Nansebo, he was tapped to manage. The market disruptions led that owner to bankruptcy so Tariku and 17 other workers at the washing station formed a company, opened a new washing—which Tariku managed. Later, he opened a new washing station by himself—this one, in Arsi—to supply coffee to the international market. Once that mill in Nansebo was stabilized and had enough producers contributing cherry, he returned to his hometown of Bombe and built a washing station there. Before the government made it possible for smallholders to obtain export licenses, both he and his father sold their cherry to the cooperative. Basha now has his own export license and grows coffee (primarily 74158, known locally as “Walega”) in semi-forested plots on 12 hectares in addition to operating collection sites in Bombe, Shantawane, and Kokose—collecting cherry from producers growing coffee as high as 2300 masl. While cherry prices were high this year, Basha maintained a practice we didn’t see everywhere: delivering a second payment to the 126 producers he bought cherry from once the coffee sold. Like most smallholders around Bensa, Basha exclusively produces dry processes—which includes experiments with anaerobic styles of fermentation—and practices cherry flotation before drying his coffee slowly on raised beds (with some preparations drying under shade). Abdul continues to reinvest. From a new moisture meter, to a new 7500 m sq drying patio (to go with raised beds) completed in 2018. It goes without saying that quality is continually on his mind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCrop to Cup doesn't normally work with estates, but Abdul has been an exception. So, we've got quality and a few other things on our mind when we visit with Abdul. In 2017 we conducted a full social audit with him and came back with quite a few recommendations. The very next year, we come to find that he's built a school on the farm for children before they go to 1st grade. He's built new toilets for the workers, 8 meters deep. In addition, he's implemented a ledger system for employees and their wages - a form of transparency that needed to be completed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAbdul is a man of action.
